[Also in Division C6] In a process and apparatus for continuously purifying, decolorizing and clarifying, at a temperature not exceeding room temperature, a natural raw sugar juice, e.g. an aqueous solution of raw sugar, at least 1À0% (computed as dry substance on the weight of the juice) of a vegetable defecating agent which has been extracted by aqueous extraction from umbelliferous plants suchasmountainhemlock Levisticum officinale, orborage, is dissolved or dispersed in the juice, in tanks 3, to flocculate impurities. The defecated juice is then prefiltered, as by being passed through a centrifugal separator 8 and settling filters 15, to remove most of the flocculated impurities, and is then passed through a polyamidic filter 24, e.g. comprising powdered nylon, to remove some of the remaining phenolic and nitrogenous impurities. The filtered juice is then passed through a column 26 containing a catalyst in the form of a metal oxide or hydroxide, such as ferric hydroxide carried on silica or alumina gel, or aluminium hydroxide carried on silica gel, which transforms remaining impurities into substances removable by ion-exchange treatment. Preferably, during the catalytic treatment, a stream of air containing sterilized ozone is blown, through a pipe 27, in countercurrent to the juice, to stimulate and accelerate the catalytic action. The resulting juice is then passed through another polyamidic filter 34, and is then subjected to ion-exchange treatment at 36, or to electrodialysis at 38, and is finally passed through a cation-exchanger 42 charged with ferric ions. The purified juice emerging at 43 may be mildly heated and concentrated, by evaporation of water, or, alternatively, by freezing and removal of ice, to yield a syrup, from which white sugar may be crystallized. A sugar solution such as an aqueous solution of raw sugar, which does not require defecation by the vegetable defecating agent, may be fed, through a pipe 49, directly into the polyamidic filter 24. |
