A valve arrangement on a piston (19) and cylinder engine (11) for controlling the inlet and exhaust ports (22, 23) comprises a chamber (26), into which the ports (22, 23) open at a distance from one another, and a valve piston (27) displaceable therein, which has an aperture for exposing either the inlet or exhaust port and the axial displacement of which is controlled by cam faces on a flywheel (28), drive coupled to the piston (19), against which faces a part of the valve piston (27), designed as cam follower, is held in contact by an axially acting return spring. <IMAGE>
