The present invention relates to a process for the wet oxidation of waste waters (effluents) which contain more than 1000 ppm of bound halogen or halide, these waste waters being treated with oxygen-containing gases at temperatures of 250 to 350 DEG C, at pressures of 40 to 250 bar and a pH above 7, and the waste water, before the oxidation, being adjusted to a COD value of at least 30 kg/m<3>.
