The aim of the invention is to allow an even keyboard operation for the operator whilst minimising the production outlay and expenditure and ruling out the possibility of faulty operation. It is based on the object of developing a shift key unit, in which only a brief shift key operation is required for triggering the shift whilst avoiding a shift key lever collar and, when it is cancelled, automatic triggering of the shift return is made possible, and in which the required key operation forces correspond only to those of the character keys. According to the invention, the shift key unit is characterised in that the shift key lever is provided with a first projection which triggers the shift lever and with a second projection which, via a latch, connects the shift key lever with rotary movement to the triggering latch, and the triggering latch can be adjusted by a coupler attached to it so that it operates a nose formed on the shift lever and tensions the leaf spring as a power accumulator for triggering the shift return. The invention can be used for power-driven typewriters or similar office machines. <IMAGE>
