Pyromellitic diimides of the formula: …… are administered orally to ruminants to improve feed efficiency. Orally administrable compositions contain the pyromellitic diimide and an inert carrier. In the formula R is a hydrogen atom, certain acyl, univalent hydrocarbon, substituted hydrocarbon or substituted amino radicals, particularly lower hydroxyalkyl, and X and Y are hydrogen, halogen or lower alkyl.
