PURPOSE:To improve the capacity to resist against heat and wear out by coating at least a sliding periphery surface of a piston ring with ion plating and by producing a film of titunium nitride having hardness Hv1300 and over and thickness 3 to 20mu and sliding periphery roughness 2mu and lower. CONSTITUTION:The sliding periphery surface of a piston ring raw member 1 is covered with a titunium nitride film, using a high vacuum type ion plating unit which is provided with an electron beam as a vaporization source and an ionized electrode near the vaporization source. Compared with the conventional hard chromium plating, this ion plating is superior about the capacity to resist against heat and wear out. A sufficient wear out resistant capacity can be maintained especially by making the hardness of film Hv1300 and over. Furthermore, by providing the film thickness of 3 to 20mu, this ion plating method can prevent the generation of crack, maintaining the effect of film. The roughness of the sliding periphery surface is specified to be below 2mu to prevent the cylinder from damage. |
