A receptor sheet 10 is coated with insulating liquid from a roller 14 and passed between a stylus bar 22 and a fountain 24 from which conductive ink 26 flows to engage the insulating liquid layer. A computer 34 controls the application of electric potentials to styli in the bar 22 which determine the pattern in which the conductive ink displaces the insulating liquid and wets the receptor surface. The image is dried and the insulating liquid removed by heater 50. In alternative arrangements water is applied in the required pattern and subsequently contacted with a viscous water miscible ink. The image on the receptor sheet 10 may be transferred to a paper or fabric web to be printed. Other means for applying the ink are rollers and doctor blades. <IMAGE> |
