In a Weston standard cell, in which a liquid and a semi-liquid electrode are maintained in position by plugs, each plug is resiliently biased against its electrode. The cell may comprise casing 1 which is initially open at the top of each limb. A negative electrode 2 of semi-liquid cadmium amalgam and a positive electrode 3 of mercury are first introduced into each limb of the case. Each electrode is held in position by a plug 4, 5. Each plug comprises two discs separated by quartz wool 7. Each disc is of PTE E and has a peripheral recess and a plurality of axial holes through it. Each plug is resiliently biased against its electrode by a glass spring 8. The upper end of each limb is then closed, sealing in the free end of each spring but leaving filling tube 1a open. A solution of cadmium sulphate is then added as electrolyte and the filler tube is also closed. |
