1309943 Dyeing compositions; fluorescent brightener compositions SOC CIVILE SOLTEX 18 March 1970 [18 March 1969] 12915/70 Headings D1B and D1P Two phase heterogeneous aqueous compositions used for the colouration or optical brightening of fibres having a basic character comprise an anionic dye or optical brightening agent dissolved or dispersed in a two phase system comprising a hydrophilic organic phase which is acidic and contains an organic acid, an acid-alcohol (i.e. a compound containing both acidic and alcoholic functions) or an alcohol or any mixture thereof, and a second lipophilic phase which is at least 85% by weight of the total composition and consists of an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon which may be substituted, or a mixture of these compounds. The hydrophilic phase may contain by weight 1 to 99% water, 99 to 1% of alcohol, e.g. methanol, isopropanol, butanol or isobutanol or up to 80% of an organic acid or acid-alcohol, e.g. formic, acetic, lactic or tartaric acid. When the hydrophilic phase comprises an alcohol the required acidity may be provided by mineral acid or a salt, e.g. ammonium tartrate or sulphate providing mineral or organic acid, or by the anionic dyestuff when used in the free acid form. The lipophilic phase is preferably a chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, e.g. methylene chloride or trichlorethylene, white spirit or petroleum ether. The constituents of the composition may form an azeotropic mixture and swelling agents may be present. The two phases may be emulsified by stirring and the emulsion formed stabilised by adding ampholytic, cationic, anionic or non ionic surface active agents. In further embodiments (a) the lipophilic phase may comprise a component of the hydrophilic phase provided the aqueous medium remains heterogeneous and (b) the two phase heterogeneous aqueous medium may be formed at fibre level by treating water-containing fibres with the corresponding anhydrous mixture. The examples describe dyeing polyamide-N nylon 6-6, wool, silk, polyurethane fibres and animalised polyalkylene fibres with acid and direct dyes and nylon 6-6 fibres with C.I. brightening agent 15. |
