The addn. of ZnO (10% based on total other components) caused reduced smoke generation in the burning of compsn. contg. 50-90% butadiene-nitrile or urethane elastomer, 10-50% halogen-contg. org. compds., and optionally Sb2O3 and other flame retardants. Thus, a compn. contg. acrylonitrile-butadiene elastomer 45.0, PVC 45.0, Uniflex 320 plasticizer 10.0, Sb2O3 5.0, and ZnO 20 was molded into test pieces that had a >54% redn. in smoke generation when compared to molding prepd from similar compns. contg. no ZnO.
