A clarifier for fluids especially water has a filter bed having a series of layers of particulate material. The material in one layer is so fine that it is fluidized during purging while the material of another layer is too coarse to be fluidized and is located beneath the layer of fine material. Located between these two layers is a lower screen 80 having openings which will not allow movement therethrough of the coarse material. An upper screen is located on top of the layer of fine material and has openings large enough to allow passage of the fine material therethrough when the fine material layer is fluidized but small enough to prevent breakup of said layer of fine material while unfluidized. The layer of coarse material is supported by a perforated distributor plate which has a plurality of nozzles through which a liquid to be clarified and a purging fluid are introduced. The distributor plate 70 and lower screen 80 are each provided with spaced beams 100, 110 fixed thereto and also tensile fasteners 90 interconnecting the distributor plate and lower screen at a number of locations for maintaining an equal distance between the distributor plate and the screen. <IMAGE> |
