The present invention relates to a method for carrying out directionally dependent coupling of optical fibres and, in particular, a method for the controlled polishing of said fibres. A portion of the optical fibres (1) is fixed by bonding on the convex surface of a planoconvex lens (2), and the cladding of the fibres is polished with the aid of a glass plate (7), which is spread on the reference surface (6) with a polishing paste. This polishing is performed in a controlled way by introducing radiation into the core of the fibre at its end A and observing the radiation transmitted through the fibre at its end B.
