The rotary (5) gripper cylinder (3) is intended for a labelling machine. It comprises a gripper with a fixed (9) and pivoted (7) jaw (8) to grip the leading edge of the label (10). There is a projecting finger (12) to support the trailing edge of the label, a resilient pressure pad (11) between gripper and finger and a wiper assembly (14) between gripper and pad to place the leading area of the label on the bottle as this moves (4) along a curved path. The assembly (14) comprises a radially movable cam (19) follower (20) member (16) which carries a wiper brush (17) or the like. The brush may be partly covered by a label supporting plate (18).
