1289535 Glycol esters HALCON INTERNATIONAL Inc 24 Sept 1969 [26 Sept 1968] 47069/69 Heading C2C Glycol esters of carboxylic acids are prepared by contacting an ethylenically unsaturated compound containing at least three carbon atoms with a carboxylic acid and oxygen at an elevated temperature in the presence of (a) at least one halogen selected from bromine and chlorine, and bromine or chlorine compounds producing bromide or chloride ions in solution and (b) at least one source of variable valence metal cations selected from Te, Ce, Sb, Mn, As and Co. The halogen may be as such, or as acid, or as alkali or alkaline earth metal salt or may be provided by the variable valence metal present as bromide or chloride. Many carboxylic acids such as mono- or di-aliphatic acids, alicyclic monocarboxylic acids, heterocyclic acids and aromatic acids are listed and alkenes, aralkenes and cycloalkenes may be the ethylenically unsaturated compounds, e.g. propylene, butene-2, 2-methylbutene-2 or allyl acetate and others are listed. The carboxylic acid may be used as a solvent for the reaction. Examples describe the reaction of propylene, butene-2, 2-methylbutene-2, allyl alcohol, heptene-2, pentadecene- 1, 1,3-butadiene, styrene, and cyclopentene with acetic, caproic, palmitic, succinic, chloropropionic, cyanoacetic, methoxyacetic, 3- methylthiopropionic, benzoic, p-toluic, 2-naphthoic, m-chlorobenzoic, o-nitrobenzoic, salicylic, p - hydroxybenzoic, m - aminobenzoic, phenylacetic, 2-phenylbutyric, 1-naphthaleneacetic, hexahydrobenzoic, picolinic, nicotinic, 3-indoleacetic, furoic, 2-thiophenecarboxylic and quinolinic acids with varying cations and halogen sources. |
