Process for the production of a composite article, and a binder suitable for this purpose

In order to produce composite articles, a resin binder made from a furan-formaldehyde condensation product having a high hydroxymethyl content is proposed which, diluted with water, is applied to matrix-forming particles and cured to a thermofixed state. A resin binder mixture of this type can contain a latent catalyst, for example ammonium lignosulphonate, which is only activated at elevated temperatures and cures the resin binder. The invention is used in the production of chipboard and other compression-moulded composite articles of moderate and high density and in the production of unshaped composite articles of low density, such as sound-absorbent wall boards and heat-insulating mats and boards.
