A white cast iron alloy is produced under a subcritical heat treatment to obtain hardness values of 750 H.V. This alloy is composed of, in per cent by weight: carbon 2.8% - 3.5% silicon 0.6% - 2.0% manganese 0.05% - 0.5% sulphur 0.05% - 0.25% phosphorus 0.5% - 1.5% nickel 3.5% - 5.0% chromium 2.5% - 4.5% molybdenum 0.2% - 0.7% the remainder being iron and slight impurities. As a safeguard against the possible formation of graphite, particularly in heavy cast sections, the alloy can contain up to 0.01% by weight of bismuth.
