This self-aligning-piston machine, which is envisaged as a motor, compressor or pump, has at least one skirtless self-aligning piston (57) rigidly connected to the connecting rod (44), the piston rim (49) being guided with variable prestress in a cylinder (40) with a concavity corresponding to its reciprocating and pendulum motion and having a square, rectangular, round or oval cross-section. This prestress is produced by the mass moment of inertia of at least one liquid column (64) or of a movable actuating mass in the region of the top dead centre of the piston and is maintained by a non-return valve (22) and rises approximately as the square of the increase in rotational speed, i.e. as the dynamic side forces arising in the self-aligning piston (57). Together with integrated, automatic compensation of wear and thermal deformation, play-free, noiseless and low-friction piston operation without piston slap is obtained at all times. <IMAGE>
