1302198 Shaft seals GEORGE ANGUS & CO Ltd 30 April 1970 [9 May 1969] 23697/69 Addition to 1182426 Heading F2B In a shaft seal comprising a sealing ring of elastomeric material having a sealing lip with a circumferential sealing edge 5 between inner and outer frusto-conical surfaces 7 and 6 the outer surface 6, which in use faces away from the sealed fluid, is formed with at least two mutually intersecting ridges Y and Z, each ridge lying in a plane oblique to the plane of the edge 5 at an angle of not more than 20 degrees, preferably not more than three degrees, and with its end intercepting the edge 5 to present a pair of oppositely directed vane surfaces. As shown, there are two mutually intersecting sets of peripheral parallel ridges Y and Z providing pairs of vane surfaces Y<SP>1</SP>, Y<SP>2</SP>, Y<SP>3</SP> and Z<SP>1</SP>, Z<SP>2</SP>, Z<SP>3</SP>, the ridges Y lying in planes having a different orientation about the sealing ring axis X-X to the planes containing the ridges Z. The ridges intersect at junction 8 and form rhomboidal spaces 9. |
