A process for the recovery of solvents is disclosed. A carrier gas stream 14 laden with solvent vapours in an evaporation space 12 is compressed by a compressor 24, cooled, e.g. by heat exchanger 26, and expanded by turbine 30 with the production of work to condense solvent vapours and separate the solvent. The carrier gas stream low in solvent vapours is returned into the evaporation space 18 after being reheated e.g. by the exchanger 26. The work arising on expansion is used in mechanical coupling with the compressor 24 for compressing the carrier gas stream laden with solvent vapours.
