An optical table for use in scanning an original for photographic reproduction using a laser beam comprises a rectangular framework 16 supported on a rigid support framework (12, Fig. 2 not shown) at only three locations (31); the rectangular framework 16 including a pair of parallel rails 17 along which an optical table 28 is mounted for movement by means of two roller carriages 36 that roll along one rail and a block 51 secured to a bar 57 which carries rollers 61 that engage the other rail. As shown, the table 28 carries optics 91-93 and is driven along the rails by a lead screw 86 rotated by a motor 80.
