Tool slide for machine tool - is moved by power cylinder whilst speed is controlled via selectively driven screw spindle

The mechanism is intended for driving a movable component, e.g. the tool carrier slide (1) of a machine tool. It comprises a piston (5) fixed to the bed (3), in a cylinder (4) in the slide. The slide is coupled to the bed via a screw bore (in 14) which is engaged by a screw spindle (12) so that a braking force acts on the slide when the cylinder is pressurised. The spindle is selectively drivable by a variable step-motor (15), via gearing (16,17). The stroke speed of the component is controlled, whilst its machining power is provided by the pressure in the cylinder.
