A wheel slide prevention device is described for rail vehicles, the axles (10) of which are braked by way of jointly actuated brakes (21). Sliding processes of the axles are detected by way of axle pick-ups (11) and an analysing device (13). On each axle (10) a sliding process can be counteracted by brief releasing of the assigned brake (21). Controls (23) assigned to the brakes serve for this purpose. In the event of synchronous sliding of all axles (10) a generator unit (12) generates a probable speed signal. At the same time the brakes on the sliding axles (11) are briefly released. On one of the axles re-braking is delayed until rolling of the axle has been re-established. This can be detected in that the positive re-acceleration of the axle turns into negative braking acceleration caused by the braking of the vehicle. The speed of the axle (10) is determined at the instant of inversion. This value serves for correction of the speed value emitted by the generator unit (12) at the same instant. <IMAGE>
