A method and apparatus for determining a hemodynamic characteristic form noninvasive measurements of blood pressure (18, 160 and 165) in a human body simultaneously with measurement of a characteristic value (15, 101, 100, 105), such as impedance, a cross section of the body, and processing (20, 120) signals representative of the characteristic value in the blood pressure measurements through an electronic device (120, 130, 140) to obtain an electrical signal representing the hemodynamic characteristic. In the illustrated embodiment, means (40, 170, 175) are provided for displaying the hemodynamic characteristic, such as by means of a video display, graph, plot, or printout. In the illustrated embodiment, a plurality of the noninvasive measurements are taken over a time period, and the hemodynamic characteristic is determined and displayed responsive to the plurality of noninvasive measurements. Hemodynamic characteristics which can be determined in accordance with the teachings of the present invention include cardiac output over a time period, modulus of elasticity of the arterial walls in the body section across which measurement is being made, blood flow, cardiac output, contractility, useful power output of the heart, systemic vascular resistance, cardiac index, stroke volume, cross-sectional area of the blood vessels within the body section, and so forth. The determination can be made in absolute terms, relative terms, in terms of deviation from mean, or in terms of a range of values. The determined value can be displayed in the form of a chart, graph, curve, table, or other forms. |
