Case 2546 AIR COOLING ARRANGEMENT FOR A DISC MOTOR An improved air cooling arrangement for an axial air gap dynamoelectric machine has a stator housing surrounding a discoidal rotor. On the inside of the housing, closely spaced from the sides and peripheral edge of the end head portion of the rotor, are a number of ribs. Thus, each rib has an axially extending or transverse portion and two side portions to provide vortical air flow and improve heat transfer from rotor to stator. A fan is mounted to the rotor and extends outwardly of the stator housing with the blades moving adjacent and outside the housing. A cover plate over the fan blades, fastened to the outer periphery of the housing, provides a plenum chamber in which the fan blades move. There is a generally centrally located opening in the cover plate to admit air, and the end portion of the stator housing has a plurality of axially directed air conducting passages spaced around the end portion and communicating with the plenum chamber through which the air passes when it leaves the plenum chamber.
|
