An ashless lubricant additive that has an oleophilic hydrocarbon group and a polar group and which is obtained by reacting an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid with 40 to 700 carbon atoms, or a derivative thereof, with an amine having at least two hydroxyl groups, may be added to synthetic lubricating oils, lubricating oils containing fatty oils or to lubricating greases. The additive may be added in the form of a concentrate in oil. Conventional additives such as anti-oxidants, detergent additives, viscosity index improvers, anti-corrosives, anti-foaming agents, pour-point reducers and agents to improve the lubricating effect may be added. In the example the reaction product of polyisobutenyl carboxylic acid and tris-(hydroxymethyl)-aminomethane is added to a solvent-refined paraffinic lubricating oil distillate and tested in diesel and gasoline engines.ALSO:An ashless lubricant additive that has an oleophilic hydrocarbon group and a polar group is obtained by reacting an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid with 40 to 700 carbon atoms, or a derivative thereof, with an amine having at least two hydroxyl groups in the molecule. The reaction product may be prepared from the carboxylic acid itself or from its acid chloride or anhydride. The preferred monocarboxylic acids are those with a polyisobutenyl group and the preferred amines have at least three hydroxyl groups. In the example, a polyisobutylene carboxylic acid obtained by heating polyisobutylene with nitric acid and water is reacted with tris-(hydroxymethyl)-aminomethane. |
