A surgical probe, the tip 42 of which can be cooled as desired, comprises an insulated handle 20 housing coiled tubing 26 and capillary tubing 36 through which nitrogen gas is supplied under pressure to an expansion chamber 34, the cooled gas being allowed to pass through an inner conduit 50 to the interior of the probe tip 42 and then back along an outer tube 54 to a space 56 from which it escapes to atmosphere through a valve 60. The cooled gas from the chamber 34 is also passed through a conduit 28 over the surface of the coiled tube 26 and exhausts at the outlet 38 so that the tube 26 acts as a heat exchanger. The tip 42 may be interchanged with tips of different shapes and a thermocouple wired through the handle 20 indicates the temperature of the tip. The heat exchanger is said to be removable as a unit from within the housing. In an alternative embodiment, Figures 5-17 (not shown), a valve 60 and the spaces 34. 56 are not provided, the capillary tube (158), Figure 9 (not shown), leading directly to an expansion chamber (166), Figure 10 (not shown), at the probe tip from where the gas returns via an outer concentric tube (168). A valve is said to be provided in the gas supply to the probe. In this second embodiment, an electrical heating coil (196) is provided in the probe tip and the housing is formed as a double-walled jacket providing a vacuum insulating space. |
