Halogenated saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon solvents to be used for degreasing metals or dry cleaning may be stabilized by the addition of an ortho-ester of the formula <FORM:1120139/C4-C5/1> where R = H or an alkyl group having 1-3 C atoms and R1, R2, R3 = alkyl groups having 1-3 C atoms. Specified solvents are dichloroethane, trichloroethane, 1,2-dichloropropane, 1,2- or 2,3-dichlorobutane tribromoethane and 1,2-dibromopropane which can be stabilized with trimethylorthoformate, trimethylorthoacetate and other specified ortho-esters. One or more compounds selected from aliphatic alcohol or thiol (having 1-4 C atoms), ester (1-6 C) or nitrile (2-4 C) aliphatic or cyclic ether-oxide (3-6 C), aliphatic ketone (3-8 C), aliphatic or cyclic acetal (3-10 C) aliphatic organic acid (2-6 C), iminoether or ketimine (2-10 C), a nitroalkyl (1-4 C), pyran pyrrole, pyrroline, an aliphatic isocyanate, thiocyanate or isothiocyanate (2-6 C), alkylorthocarbonate or alkylcarbonate (3-7 C) may also be added. |
