<p>The engine has a reciprocating piston in a cylinder with controlled inlet and exhaust. Means are provided to adjustably vary the action of the inlet and exhaust mechanism, which means comprise one or more rotary cams (1) which can be moved axially whereby the cams are provided with axially spaced regions (A-D) having different cam profiles. The cam(s) may have a region which does not reciprocate the corresponding cam follower. The axial movement of the cam may be provided by a mechanism which is coupled to the throttle or speed control of the engine and/or to the brake system of a motor vehicle.</p> |
