PURPOSE:To improve the printing speed by arranging heat generating elements in a larger inter-row distance than that of a matrix to be recorded in a thermal head having a plurality of rows of heat generating elements. CONSTITUTION:In a thermal printer designed to perform a matrix printing with a thermal head having several rows of heat generating elements 2 and 3, the center-to- center distance between several row of heat generating elements 2 and 3 is arranged to be larger, for example, twice than the center-to-center distance l2 of rows of matrix to be recorded. For example, when printing a characer of N, heat generating elements 3 selectively emit heat to record a row R1 and the thermal head 1 is shifted by one dot to the right to record the row R1. Likewise, the rows R4, R3, R6 and R5 are recorded sequentially. This can double the printing speed to allow two rows of heat generating elements 2 and 3 to generate head alternately. |
