Immediately after coiling, hot steel strip coils are subjected to accelerated cooling esp. at their edge zones, for several hours so that the edge zones are cooled to and maintained at less than 300 deg.C. Pref. the coils are placed horizontally in a single layer on a plane surface with adjacent coil edge zones spaced by a distance of at least one coil length, while cold air is circulated around the coils pref. by fans or compressed air sources placed between adjacent coil edge zones. The forced air cooling of the coil edges prevents thickening of a magnetite- and hematite-contg. scale layer in this zone so that the subsequent pickling operation is more uniform and more rapid and overpickling is avoided.
|
