The invention relates to a method for controlling the illuminating light beams for use in an image reproducing machine such as a colour scanner or a colour facsimile. In this case, a light beam is fed into an acousto-optic deflector by which it is deflected in order to obtain diffraction light beams which fall into fixed optical paths and are utilised to expose a reproduction film. The diffraction light beams are controlled due to the fact that a frequency of an ultrasonic wave which is input into the acousto-optical deflector is varied in such a way that each diffraction light beam is capable of falling or not falling into the respective optical path. <IMAGE>
