Electrolytes for Al electrolytic capacitors, having high corrosiion resistance, extended service life even at high temp., and good low-temp. properties, contain an ammonium salt of a carboxylic acid dissolved in ethylene glycol, 0.5-10%(wt./vol.) B2O3, and optionally>=1 addnl. solvent. Thus, 5g ammonium adipate was dissolved in 100cm3 ethylene glycol and a capacitor was made contg. this electrolyte. The capacitor had ratings of 160V and 680 μF and had Z/Zo=1.16 but showed corrosion in a changing test with 60-Hz a.c. at 2 A and 85o for 500h. When 2% B2O3 was added to the electrolyte, Z/Zo was still 1.16, but no corrosion occurred.
