The container with a circular or oval rim (3) has a lid (5) with a aentral recess with a vertical wall to receive the base of a similar container to facilitate stacking. The lid has a curved outer edge (6) which fits over the matching edge (4) of the container and is secured by a lip (7). The lid has a flexible lip (19) which forms a seal with the vertical part of a rim (3). The flexible lip is an extension of an intermediate wall (16) of the lid. There are a number of radial ribs between this intermediate wall and the inner wall (11). If an excessive load is placed on the lid, due to the stacking of a large number of containers, the lid is pushed inwards until these ribs abut against a collar (14) projecting from the wall (12) of the container.
