Axially moving wedges in lathe chuck - are actuated by double-acting cylinder to give inward movement of clamp jaws

The lathe chuck comprises a main body (1) which is secured (6,7) at the end (8) of the headstock spindle and contains wedges (2) axially movable (via 4,9) by a double-acting hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder with a piston rod (9). The wedges are slidable in axial grooves in the body and have their centre-facing inclined faces in contact with clamp jaws (3) which are radially slidable in openings in the body. During this radial movement, the centres of gravity of the jaws remain radially inward of the wedges. The arrangement ensures that the clamping force is not affected by the rotational speed of the chuck.
