Der Farbstoff hat die allgemeine Formel <IMAGE> mit R¹, R³, R<4>, R<6> = H, OH, OCH3, NH2, NHCH3, NO2; <IMAGE> (R<7> = H, Alkyl, Cycloalkyl, Alkoxy, Alkylmercapto, Amino, Alkylamino, Dialkylamino, Nitro, Cyano, Halogen); <IMAGE> CHO, COOR<9>,CH2-OR<9> (R<8> = H, Alkyl, Cycloalkyl, Alkoxy, Alkylmercapto, Amino, Alkylamino, Dialkylamino, Nitro, Cyano, Halogen; R<9> = H, Alkyl) und entweder R¹, R<4> = H, OH, NH2, NHCH3, NO2, OCH3, wobei wenigstens einer der beiden Reste ein NH2 oder Ein NHCH3 ist; R³ = R<6> = H oder R³, R<6> = H, OH, NH2, NHCH3, NO, OCH3, wobei wenigstens einer der beiden Reste ein NH2 oder ein NHCH3 ist, R¹ = R<4> = H. Besonders günstig ist die Verbindung 1,5-Diamino-6-(4-butylphenylimino-methyl)anthrachinon-2-carbaldehyd. Farbstoffe der genannten Formel ergeben zusammen mit geeigneten gelben und blauen Farbstoffen unbunte Gemische. Beispiel: 1,5-Diamino-2,6-di(phenylimino-methyl)anthrachinon/1,5-Dihydroxy-2-methoxyphenyl-anthrachinon/1,5-diamino-4,8-dihydroxy-3,7-di(4-methoxyphenyl)anthrachinon. Der Flüssigkristall findet vor allem bei absorptiven Flüssigkristallanzeigen Verwendung.
