Der Farbstoff hat die allgemeine Formel <IMAGE> wobei R¹, R³, R<4>, R<6>= H, OH, OCH3, NH2, NO2, NHCH3, N(CH3)2 und R², R<5> = Alkoxyphenyl und entweder R¹ = OH, R³ = R<6> = H, R<4> = H, OH, NH2, NO2 oder R¹ = R<4> = H, R³ = OH, R<5> = H, OH, NH2, NO2. Bevorzugte Vertreter sind 1,5-Dihydroxy-2,6-di(4-methoxyphenyl)anthrachinon und 1,5-Dihydroxy-2,6-di(4-pentoxy-phenyl)anthrachinon. Die Anthrachinone sind gelb und können mit blauen und roten Farbstoffen unbunte Mischungen ergeben. Beispiel: 1,5-Dihydroxy-2,6-di(4-pentoxyphenyl)enthrachinon/1,5-Diamino-4,8-dihydroxy-3,7-di(4-methoxyphenyl)anthrachinon/1,5-Diamino-6-(4-butylphenylimino-methyl)anthrachinon-2-carbaldehyd. Hauptanwendungsgebiet sind absorptive Flüssigkristallanzeigen.
