A boring head which can produce conical bores, comprises a housing 60, Fig. 2 (not shown), and a number of spring-urged tools 4 adjustable by an axially movable member 11, having a guideway for the end 9 of each tool. A spindle 13 is screwed into member 11, and is secured therein by a set screw, and it is also screwed into a worm-wheel 20, and a fixed member 35. Wheel 20 has a gear rim 21, in meshing engagement with a gear 25, Fig. 4 (not shown), which in turn engages a gear 25<SP>1</SP> having a vernier plate 26, Fig. 2 (not shown), and a worm 22, Figs. 2, 4 (not shown), in engagement with wheel 20, is rotatable by means of bevel gears 24, 24<SP>1</SP> driven by a sprocket 27 which co-operates with a cam (not shown). The worm 22 may also be rotated by a crank 23. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), a friction wheel 29 is carried by a block 62 which is pivotable about a shaft 28, and carries a latching hook 32, and sprockets 30, 301, connected by a chain 31. In operation crank 23 is rotated to feed spindle 13 and member 11 axially, thus moving tools 4 outwardly to the required cutting diameter. During the boring operation, if a conical bore is to be produced, the tools are moved inwardly automatically, as the sprocket 27 of Fig. 2 (not shown), is indexed by a cam during rotation to retract member 11, or in the case of Fig. 6 (not shown), wheel 29 is urged into engagement with a stationary tapered surface 34, thus varying the rotational speed of shaft 28 during rotation of the boring head. |
