CHLOROACETANILIDES HAVING HERBICIDAL ACTIVITY

The invention is concerned with new chloroacetanilides of the general formula: (I) wherein: R1 is hydrogen, an alkyl with 1-5 carbon atoms or the radical X; X is an alkenyl group; A is an optionally substituted alkylene group of the formula: or in which the radicals R2 which are the same or different each represents hydrogen or an alkyl with 1-3 carbon atoms; and Y is an alkoxy, carbalkoxy, cyano or -OCH2-furyl group. The chloroacetanilides of the invention have herbicidal activity while exhibiting little toxicity toward maize. They are particularly useful in combatting infestations of infesting ?nocotyledons and dicotyledons during pre-emergence.
