[Also in Division F1] The discharge of a central column 6 of gas released from a liquid suspension of solid particles in the vortex chamber 2 of a hydrocyclone is effected .by suction by means of a rotary vacuum .pump 11 via discharge con duits 7, 7a and via a liquid centrifugal pump 8 which communicates at its suction side with the conduit 7a, the vacuum, pump 11 being connected to a suction line 12 which opens out as at 13 into the centre of the centrifugal pump impeller 14. In operation, a portion of fine solids and liquid is entrained with the gas and on entering the pump 8 is caught by the impeller blades 16 and pumped out through a line 10 and a collecting conduit 5a through which the bulk of the fine solids is discharged with liquid. The gas which is concentrated at the centre of the pump impeller around the opening .13 of the line 12 is sucked away by the vacuum pump 11. Vapour released from any hot liquid entering the pump 8 is simillarly removed. Thus the vacuum pump 11 serves to maintain the pumping action of the centrifuged pumps under vacuum while simultaneously the latter acts as a separator preventing liquid and solid particles from entering the vacuum pump. A number of hydrocyolones may be connected in parallel between the conduits 5a and 7a. |
