NEW MATERIAL:A cephem or penam compound having a structure of formulaI(R<1> is arbitrarily protected primary amino or hydroxyl group; R<2> is primary amino or hydroxyl group or a group convertible to one of these groups; R<3> is H, methoxy, group convertible to methoxy; R<8> is H, halogen) as a part and a compound of formula II. EXAMPLE:Sodium 7alpha-methoxy-7beta-( 2-aminothiazol-4-ylglycylamido )-3-(1-methyl-1H- tetrazol-5-ylthiomethyl)-3-cephem-4-carboxylate. USE:Antibiotic and its synthetic intermediate: it is effective against gram-positive and-negative bacteria. PREPARATION:For example, the reaction between a compound of formula II and another compound having a partial structure of formula III affords the compound having a partial structure of formulaI. The compound of formula II is obtained, e.g., by reduction of a compound of formula IV (R<5> is arbitrary protected hydroxyl group), and when necessary, removing the protecting group.
