Bleaching is carried out by treating an organic fibrous material with a soln. (1) an optical bleaching salt, consisting of the anionic residue of an anionic optical bleaching agent and is not 1 nitrogen organic cpd which has is not 1N atom capable of salt-formation in (2) a solvent mixture which is formed of (i) 50-99wt.% of a (halogenated) hydrocarbon boiling at 50-150 degrees C and (ii) 50-1 wt.% of a liquid, water-soluble organic solvent boiling below 220 degrees C. The treatment is at between room temp. and the boiling point of the solvent. The optically bleached fibrous material is then finished in the usual way. The fibres are esp. cellulose or synthetic polyamides, although other fibres can be treated. The process gives a uniform, brilliant, whiteness, which is resistant to dry cleaning and washing. |
