PROCESS FOR PREPARATION OF POLYENE COMPOUNDS

Polyenes(I; R1,R2 = H, halogen, lower alkoxy; R3,R4,R5,R6 = H, lower alkyl; R7 = lower alkoxy carbonyl; n = 1, 2) useful as tumor inhibitors and in treating acne and psoriasis were prepd. Thus, Friedel-Craft acetylation of 1,1,3,3-tetra methylindan gave the 5-acetyl deriv. which was reduced (LiAl H4) to α,1,1,3,3-pentamethyl-5-indanmethanol. Treatment of this with PBr3 gave the 5-(1-bromoethyl) analoge which quaternized PPh3 to give the phosphonium salt II. A wittig reaction of II with OCHCH:CHCMe:CHCO2Et gave all-trans I(R1,,R2,R5,R6 = H; R3,R4 = Me; R7 = CO2Et; n = 1).
