A heating system for the passenger compartment of a motor vehicle with a heating device (3) has a bypass line (11) which allows the water cooling jacket of the engine and a water pump (9) driven by the engine to be bypassed. A thermostatic valve (12B) is arranged between a feed line (2A) from the water cooling jacket of the engine and the heating device, with the result that the liquid from the water cooling jacket of the engine is hindered from flowing into the heating circuit until the liquid has reached a certain temperature. Rapid heating of the passenger compartment is achieved by the provision of a heating circuit with a low water capacity by means of the bypass line (11). <IMAGE>
