Refractory carbide steel suitable for forming percussion tools which harden on working comprises 15-85 vol. % carbide uniformly dispersed in an austenitic matrix contg. 0.8-1.5 wt. % C, 10-20 wt. % Mn, balance Fe. Pref. the carbides are chosen from Ti, Nb, V, Ta, or their mixtures, or a Ti/W carbide solid soln. The final microstructure has an austenitic substrate with a very hard martensitic surface, of Brinell hardness up to 600. The alloy is used for manufacturing percussion tools e.g. geological drills, hammers etc.
|
