The invention relates to a controllable viscous coupling in which an electrorheological medium is used as the power transmission medium, being enclosed between opposing revolving groups of coupling elements (6, 9) between which an electric potential difference can be produced in order to alter the shear viscosity of the fluid. By differential arrangement of the coupling elements, elimination of residual entrainment effects is achieved and the coupling can be controlled electrically in a range of states between essentially complete separation and complete engagement. <IMAGE>
