The invention relates to a process for recovering hydrogen donor solvent compounds from process waste resulting from coal liquefaction, in which at least some of the process waste is brought into contact with an aqueous or an alcoholic solution of an inorganic acid, in order to remove heteroaromatic nitrogen compounds from the process waste, in that the heteroaromatic nitrogen compounds are dissolved in the aqueous or alcoholic solution; the aqueous or alcoholic solution is separated off from the undissolved portion of the process waste; the aqueous or alcoholic solution is neutralised and then the heteroaromatic nitrogen compounds are separated off from the neutralised solution and the heteroaromatic nitrogen compounds are hydrogenated for use as hydrogen donor solvent compounds.
