An air inlet for compressors comprises an inlet channel (28) which has a curved section (34). The inlet channel (28) is relatively short in the axial direction of the compressor, so that the overall length can be kept small. At least one guide insert (54) is situated in the curved section of the inlet channel and effects an essentially uniform speed distribution at the downstream end of the inlet channel. As a result, the axial dimensions can be kept small without a non-uniform speed distribution arising upstream of the rotor blades of the compressor. <IMAGE>
