Toiletry compositions

The invention relates to toiletry compositions, e.g. lotions, creams, hair tonics and the like, which contain a perfume and are advantageously free of cutaneous irritation on use owing to the action of the perfume contained therein. The toiletry compositions contain the perfume in the form of a hydrated gel of a crosslinked hydrophilic polymer such as polyvinyl alcohol, which is impregnated with the perfume so that on contact with the human skin there are no direct adverse effects of the perfume. The perfume-impregnated hydrated gel of the crosslinked hydrophilic polymer is most favourably prepared by irradiating an aqueous solution containing the hydrophilic polymer and the perfume dissolved therein with high-energy ionising radiation such as gamma rays with radiation-induced crosslinking of the polymer molecules.
