[Also in Division F2] A vibrator particularly for a road roller has a driven shaft 11 on which are keyed two eccentric masses 16<SP>1</SP>A, 16<SP>11</SP>A. A further eccentric mass 16B is freely rotatable on an eccentric bearing 31 about the shaft. As the speed of rotation of the shaft increases from zero to a maximum the mass 16B rotates about the shaft relative to the masses 16<SP>1</SP>A, 16<SP>11</SP>A to continuously vary the resultant eccentricity of the masses and maintain the centrifugal force substantially constant. A plastics covered bar between plates 35<SP>1</SP>A, 35<SP>11</SP>A welded to the masses 16<SP>1</SP>A, 16<SP>11</SP>A cooperates with projection. 21<SP>1</SP> on the mass 16B to start the latter rotating. In use the shaft is mounted axially in a road contacting roller 41 and is connected to the chassis of a road roller 40 via cross members 50 and rubber suspension blocks 51 acting in shear. The weight of the vehicle acting on the cross members is substantially equal to the combined weight of the cross members, roller and vibrator.</p> |
