An electrostatic shield [10], which is mounted in the applicator head of a conventional diathermy apparatus between the coil [16] thereof and the patient being treated by the head, comprises a first plurality of electrically conductive strips [24] which extend axially and form a body portion of the shield and which surround the current carrying coil [16], and a second plurality of electrically conductive strips [28] which form a face portion [14] of the shield and lie in a plane which is parallel to the plane of the coil [16]. Each strip [28] is electrically connected to one of the strips [24]. The strips [28] of the shield extend generally radially inwards from the outer periphery of the surface defined by the ends of the strips [24]. The strips [28] terminate within the inner porrtion of the end face of the shield such that the inner ends of the strips [28] are spaced and electrically separated from each other. A band [26] is provided around and electrically connects the ends within the inner portion of the end face of the shield [10] attenuates the electrostatic field radiated by the current carrying coil [16]. but allows passage of the radiated electromagnetic field in a relatively unimpeded fashion. |
